I just don't understand the attraction of painting the inside of the shells black. Was this a common practice back in the day? My Camcos are afflicted by this plague.

I agree. I totally admire the clear wood shells that started on the Ludwigs in 68'...... can't see any reason to cover those nice clear interiors.
