Ludwig Rocker Identification Help Last viewed: 1 hour ago

My understanding of Ludwig Rockers and I know its never an exact science but these confuse me. I want to know if they are the SL series, the 1984, 1986 or 1988 variety of Rockers. All toms and bass drum appear to be 4 ply with Granitone except the 8" and 10" tom which have different lugs and have the maple interiors. What throws me off are the mini classic lugs with the later non-standard tom mount arm - I would have expected the old standard one - maybe it came with that and the original owner added it later (I know its a stretch).

The spurs are the straight less heavier variety - the Rockers badges have serial numbers but are basically unreadable. The kit came with several stickers all over it so I'm in the process of removing those and cleaning them up.

But I really love the look of the classic lugs on these reminds of a drum set I had in my teens.

The 8 & 10 are from later on. The Granitone finish was on the early rockers..

Tom holder is of later origin also..

Looks like someone added the smaller toms and tom holder..

I just picked up a rocker set (pics to come) white POINTY B&W badge NO serial #- raw wood interior shells , short lugs with 3 lines on them, (seems old ) tom mount with ludwig witten accross the front with nuts (no wing nuts) straight spurs that slide IN the bass. but whats really weird is that when the toms are mounted the badges face the side or toward the BACK! which seems very strange to me.

Any ideas?

Actually, Rockers had a natural interior finish, Rocker IIs had the granitone interior finish. They could be of the same age and just be a mixed shell-pak. Ludwig did do this from time to time.

Rockers also had a slightly different shell ply makeup compared to the Rocker IIs. Rockers were poplar and maple, Rocker IIs were all poplar, and of a lesser finish quality than the Rockers, hence the granitone interior finish. And I also believe that Rockers were 6-ply shells, as opposed to Rocker IIs which were 4-ply shells.

Hi, Folks!

I got a Ludwig Rocker (B/W badge) 14" x 6.5" without lugs and hoops.

It's a wood shell (I think, it's marple), crome over wood. 7-digit serial number...

How can I find out, which year the drum is? I'ld love to give her the right lugs and strainer (I think it's P85) back, no matter how much the snare is worth...

Yup, granitone points to rocker II's but with the classic mini classic lugs.

The 8"& 10" have the 6 ply rocker shell with standard lugs.

Looks like the two small toms were added on later. They are listed in the catalog as an add on set.

If it were mine I'd get classic mini lugs for the 8 & 10

It contains a like to a long series of badges showing the 3 distinct Black and White versions. And it has a catalog picture of the 6.5" deep Rocker snare in 1988 (?) showing a black face P85 strainer and the lugs. Model LR-751

I have a set that i restored that's comprised of orphan Rockers like the one in your pics, with the classic lugs and granitone interior, and a later 6 ply super classic floor tom from the late 80's..My Rockers kick is a 6 ply and the rack tom is a 4 ply.. These Rockers have the shell imperfections ..

The tom and bass drum are from the same kit, but have rounded corner badges.. Ludwig had plenty of anomalies, and with the Rockers series it's easy to get confused.. My kit sounds great and that's what matters in the end.. The ones in your pics should sound just as great. Remo Vintage Coated A's or Emperors are sweet with this type of shell, as well as the Remo Control Sound Black Dots..
