I found a Ludwig rocker kit with the black/white badge for $300, it has the speckled interior and looks to be a red laquer finish, 8x12,9x13,16x16,14x22, good price? Thanks.

OK, so this kit has the black & white badge that says USA, with a brownish granitone interior. These were made in the Monroe plant, right? Would these be made of maple/poplar? Thanks.

I think select "hard woods" probably maple and poplar,I have seen stripped rocker shells with pretty nice maple face plies, not so nice face plies, and plies that looked like neither wood and even face plies with 2 and three different panels.

Would those be the USA made ones? The drums I'm looking at have thick shells and are fairly heavy. Maybe the ones you saw were the later ones that were made overseas.

No,I am talking B+W badged kits,I have an S+L kit, which was 1 year before the rockers, the shells are supposed to be the same ply lay up as the top line drums,I leveled the bearing edges with sand paper and applied lemon oil to them, the maple plies got a lot darker the poplar not so much.I also removed the wrap from the snare drum and the outside ply was maple, not real attractive, lots of knots, but I have seen other rocker kits stripped and stained natural and the outer ply was decent to pretty darn nice to furniture grade, and I have seen shells where the outside ply did not look like maple, the grain did not look like maple or poplar, and neither did the color, there was way to much variation in the color of the wood, very dark to light, IMO ludwig probably did what they needed to do to fill orders, and used classic shells if they had to to fill orders.

Well, the big question is, how did they sound? I tapped on these a bit and they were sitting next to a Ludwig maple 6ply kit and they sounded just as good, not as attractive with the red wrap, but at least they are not power toms. These have an 8x12,9x13,16x16,14x22 and they are made in the good old USA, thanks.
