Ludwig set - Price seem high? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Guys,

Not super familiar with Ludwig and their prices. Was wondering if this was a good deal. I'm not deep into collecting - plan to play this set. He mentions bass drum was rewrapped.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

I don't see any reference to anything being rewrapped. All but the first 4 photos are of a completely different set. The set appears to be a mid 60s Super Classic set. The burgendy sparkle wrap was available in the mid late '60s i believe.l. The keystone badges have serial numbers and the interiors are white, placing the set in the mid late '60s. If it's three ply , it's either mohogany poplar mahogany, or more likely maple poplar maple, I believe.

From what little I can make our via my smartphone, the kit looks to be in very good condition. Assuming it's not a rewrap, the bass drum appears to be virgin, with no holes or mounts, which was not the norm for that period. Most 3 piece super classic kits tended to have rail tom mounts and cymbal brackets on the BD. I'm also concerned because the BD hoops do not have matching inlays and are not original. If its not a rewrap and the bass drum is indeed virgin and the set is in really good condition it may well be worth $1400, but I'm a bit wary because of the wrong photos attached, the wrong hoops, and details I can't see.. Perhaps I could see the details better if I was looking at the images at home on my monitor.

But, look at how it transforms into a red lacquer kit with power toms!

It's not a completely horrible price for that Ludwig kit up here in Canada lol....what would be a fair US price for these?

I just noticed one original hoop w/inlay hanging off a cymbal stand in the second pic. So there's that......:)

The wrong photos and the wrong hoops aside, if it's all genuine and in as good a condition as it looks, I think it's worth the money. The burgundy sparkle was obviously not that popular since it was only around for a few years, but I've seen sets in much worse condition going for more money. My son and I recently purchased a set of 1960/1961 WMP Super Classics with pre-serial number badges, in good condition, for $1400. Our research seemed to indicate the price and condition was consistent with, and occasionally even better, than other early '60s kits with that wrap available at the time. However, with regard to the OP's ad, I'm always a bit wary of Craigslist.

Other than the inclusion of pictures from a completely different kit, and the wrong BD hoops, what additional concerns do you have?

At that price, it may be a little steep if the bass drum was rewrapped, which i think it may have been, seeing as how it appears to be virgin, which is another rarity in itself..

I'd offer him $1000 and see what he says.. If he accepts your offer, then you've got yourself a good deal for a 3 ply 60's, rare sparkle Ludwig kit..
