ludwig standards with classic lugs? Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Loading...

I just snatched a set of silver sparkle ludwig standards - kic, 2 mounted toms and a floor tom off of craigslist. looking at the picture on the listing I thought

I was going to pickup a set of blue/olive badge drums, what I ended up buying was a set of standard drums that had standard tom mounts and floor tom leg mounts with the lugs being the classic type.

I came across a thread were a guy said he had the same thing and he had seen a few others like this. Any idea of a time line when ludwig did this. I figured this may help me date the kit.

I guess the first thing to do would be look for extra or modified holes,I don't know if the hole spacing was the same on standard and classic lugs, are they large classics, small, a combination? Are there serial #s on the badges?sometimes ludwig would leave the ser#s off when the drums were seconds or demos or donated I have heard.I have a later standard/rocker kit that is either a rocker kit with a 6 ply standard bass,or a standard with heavy duty spurs, and no ser#s.Or it could be they needed to get the kit out the door and did'nt have enough standard lugs on hand,You never know with ludwig.

Yes Ludwig did put classic lugs on the standards when they ran low on standard lugs.....All the hardware on the standard kit is the same hole spacing as the classic hardware........

Not uncommon at all -especially on the earlier Standard sets -starting in 1968.

The large classic lugs have the same hole spacing as the bullet/rocker lugs. Check under a lug for the footprint.

Not uncommon. My standard kit has small and large classic lugs so it was definitely a factory job and the footprints match.

Look inside for a date stamped on the shells...

And post pics...
