Ludwig Standards? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Is it at all possible that when Ludwig Standards were introduced that a set may have been produced with classic lugs vice the standard lugs?? I looked at a set that has exactly that. Everything else about the drums match up with Standard sets I've seen online and in this forum. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply! I bought them in hopes that was the case. But I couldn't pass up this Avocado Strata kit. VDF rocks!! I hope there's a VDF in heaven!

I'm not 100% on that statement. I think they used the Classic lugs after they were re-introduced in the early 1980's, just before they changed to the "Rocker" name.

I believe all the older Standards that were made from approx. 1968-1972,73 had the "Standard" lug, which utilized a punched piece of metal that resembled a nut but had no threads. The later model Standard Lugs, that replaced Classic lugs on the "Rocker" series actually had a male stub with female threads that was flush or a bit less with the inside of the shell and utilized machine thread screws like the Classic lugs. The older Standard lugs had a male stub that was not threaded and it protruded from the inside of the shell but allowed the stamped "psuedo nuts" to be tightened, which most of them get stripped out eventually.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

I have seen many standard sets with classic lugs. I think they came out sometime in 1968 and it would'nt surprise me if the early ones had classic lugs. Then again knowing Ludwig if they were making sets and ran out of standard lugs it would'nt surprise me if they used classics because they were on hand. A shop near me has a 22,12,13,16 with classic lugs. The set is the red strata but it is very faded and the finish is cracked. I think they are asking $1100.00 which is WAY too much money IMO.

they used the same 3 ply shells as the classic line did. ive seen kits that came from original owners that had classic lugs. some of the earlier models had them and some of the last ones had them as well.

ludwig also did this in the late 70's with the vistalite combos. they were marketed with plastic lugs but many came from the factory with metal classic lugs..

The former owner claimed this set is from 1968. But there are no date stamps in the drums, so I guess I'll just have to take his word for it. But I'm happy with them so that's what counts!:D
