Ludwig Super Sensitive Imperial Lug Question Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Loading...

I am in the process of taking two defunct 70s SS and making one good drum. Along the way I realized that the Imperial lugs are different. One is slightly heavier and the other is noticeably thinner. 50 grams vs. 48 grams. My questions are:

Which one came first? (I assume the lighter ones were a manufacturing cost cut and came later)

Which ones should I put on the drum I am making? (I assume the heavier ones)

Also, does anyone know the history of the foundry marks CWM and KDC? I found out that CWM is Chicago White Metal, they are still in business. Not sure what KDC is.

Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I think the heavy one is pre-Conn, and the lighter one post-Conn. I'm not sure exactly, maybe it's the other way round. The art-deco pattern is slightly different as well.

Sorry, pretty vague response from me there...

Here's some more info on the drums they came off of:

Drum #1

B/O pointy badge - s/n 1017XXX - Anti Galvanic Stamp - Early 70's?

This drum had the lighter weight lugs with the KDC casting

Drum #2

B/O pointy badge - s/n 1696XXX - Anti Galvanic Blue Round Sticker - Mid/Late 70's?

This drum had the heavier weight lugs with the CWM casting. Also had the foam pieces inside to reduce spring buzz.

I have no idea what was done to these drums before I got them. I'm not sure if someone messed around with the hardware before I did or not.

There was a time in the boom when venders were shortlisted for best price points on hardware, in the day inventory was the best price of them , but assessing this would take some one with a unmolested drum from different years and weigh them up good point ! My opinion the heavy lugs would make the drum dry, the lighter less maybe that's why some drums don't sound so good as others ...

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Thanks jaghog and R.Adam McHugh. I appreciate you guys offering a little input.

I ended up installing the lighter weight lugs with the KDC casting. After inspecting the better P-70 strainer set I had I noticed the they had the same KDC casting in them. I decided to keep the strainer and lugs of the same era and on the original shell they came from. The chrome is in pretty good shape compared to most from the 70's. Sadly, the previous owner decided to drill the shell and install a Pearl tube mount. Thankfully the three small holes are not really noticeable and did not affect the sound of the drum.

Anyway, all back together and sounds great!
