Hello All,
I recently acquired (for $5, so why not?) a really generic version of a Ludwig Super Sensitive snare drum. The shell is a semi-shiny metal (it actually looks similar to a very early keystone badge Acrolite) and has a sticker that says "TJ Percussion". The lugs were not attached to the shell at all, it's like a Pearl Free Floater type system, but executed very poorly. I stripped everything off the drum, and the shell is in great shape and is nice an thin and resonant. It has the Ludwig style single "ring" going around the middle of the shell vertically (5" x 14"). The snare mechanism is virtually identical to the Ludwig Super Sensitive mechanism, complete with the end pieces and the rod going through the drum. I want to use this drum, but I am certainly not going to try to pass it off as a real Ludwig.
My question is, did the Super Sensitive use the same style lugs as a Supraphonic? There are no lugs on the shell currently, so I am looking for Ludwig Style lugs (that will fit over the raised "ring" around the center of the drum that runs vertically around the shell). I see Ludwig Bowtie snare lugs on ebay all the time, but I know that Supra's didn't use Bowtie lugs. I don't have to worry about hole distance or matching hole patterns; as there are no current lug holes on the shell. Maybe if I did use Bowtie lugs, that would further cement the "This looks like a Ludwig Super Sensitive but isn't" look for the drum.
If anybody has any Super Sensitive or Ludwig style lugs I could use; I am looking for 8 of them, assuming 14" Super Sensitive's had 8 lugs (and not 10). Again, I want this to be my "sort of Ludwig Super Sensitive that isn't but it sounds good and I got it for cheap" snare.
Also, I am assuming that companies like Gibraltar, Puresound etc. make replacement snares for a super sensitive type drum. The snares on mine are shot!
Finally, when I get the parts I need and put this thing back together, I could really use a lesson on how the throw off mechanism is supposed to be assembled, adjusted etc. If anyone is willing to help me with that.
Thanks for your help,
V
