Ludwig Thermo Gloss Advice Needed Last viewed: 1 hour ago

OK, I'm not a vintage drum collector, but because of my age I find that I have some vintage drums. I'm beginning to play out again a bit, and I think I would like to go to a more compact kit and avoid damage to my "vintage" drums. So I am considering selling my current stuff, with the original hardware. I would appreciate some opinions on the value, if I sell. My set is 1971 Ludwig Maple Thermo Gloss. Ordered from the factory in this configuration:

2 - 16x22 Bass Drums

8x12, 9x13, 10x14 Mounted Toms

16x16 and 16x18 Floor Toms

5 1/2 x 14 SupraPhonic Snare Drum

3 Original Atlas cymbal stands, original hi-hat, original snare stand (not pictured and not Atlas - don't remember why)

Nothing has been refurbished. Everything is original except I tapped a new screw into the double tom holder when the old one stripped. Chrome is nice, except some pitting on snare finish. 8x12 and 9x13 have some finish scrapes, etc. from being set up poorly during playing.

I'm not sure if I could get more by piecing the set out, but I would like to see it stay together. Any idea what I could get for these?

Oh yeah....I also have the original Ludwig hard fiber cases and trap case. Had to replace some of the leather straps with webbing though.

Very nice kit you have there!! I have a soft spot for the Thermo kits...If it were me, I'd keep the kit together...They were all born together, so they should remain together...

I will let the other members comment on value...I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents...

I have a '76 Thermo Mach kit which rumbles...I wouldn't trade it for the world...

Cheers

Hmm, beautiful kit to start with. Yes you would make more money parting it out but that could take several months and it would be a shame to break up the family. I guess you could consider selling it as two kits, 22, 14, 18 as one and 22,12,13,16 as the other and decide which one gets the snare, or sell it separate. I kind of wonder if big kits are hard to sell, you see so many 3 and four piece kits anymore. I really am not qualified to appraise drums but what I would feel comfortable paying would be around 1200 to 1500, thats just what I think. Best case would be keep them and buy another kit to gig with, once they walk out the door its bye bye for ever man! Been there and it stinks. You ordered it from the factory in 1971, dont forget that.

Thank you!

Side question - does anyone know the origin of the name Thermogloss? Just curious.

Yes it is the finsh color from the way it is applied. Which is heated clear lacquer.

Thank you, I wondered that too. I am looking at doing a kit for someone in that finish.

I'd think at least 2K worth of drums and gear.

Just a thought for you. How about you keep them all, and try using the 18 floor as a kick drum , and playing a 18-12-14 kit. That would be a cool small kit, and keep you in a great sounding vintage kit. You could just upgrade some hardware for your new "small" kit, and keep enjoying your quality old kit.
