Ludwig toms with Imperial Lugs, or just the lugs... Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hi all...

I'm in the planning/parts acquisition stage for my next drum set. I've decided to go with all Ludwig & Ludwig Imperial lugs. My bass drum has the long Imperials, and the snare does too, of course.

As far as the toms go, I'm looking for 3-ply mahogany/poplar/mahogany shells, of course, with the Imperial lugs. I'm looking for toms that have separate single lugs for the batter and resonant sides, NOT the single double-ended lugs that mount in the center of the shell, as the later Ludwig Club Date-style drums might have.

Sizes...I may be going out on a limb here... I want a 13" rack tom, and 16" and 18" floor toms. I honestly don't know exactly what all was offered back then, but that's what I'd prefer. Other sizes will be considered though. :D

The finish is irrelevant. I want to actually have a shellac finish over the mahogany. So, preferably, the wrap would be rough or missing altogether.

If the drums can't be found, then I'll just build "replicas" using the Imperial lugs. I'm actually expecting to do that, just hoping I can mix a few vintage pieces in there as well.

Here's a pic of the style of lug I'm searching for:

Thanks, all! :D

I'm not sure if the hole spacing is the same for the classic lugs and Imperial lugs to retro fit, using a clubdate style shell with the Imperial lugs?

Hmm... perhaps I need to re-word the original post.

I'd like to find original, complete L&L toms with the Imperial lugs. However finding them in rough, but restorable shape, and in the sizes I want is probably unlikely...

So, the alternate plan is to use some original Imperial lugs and install them on *new* mahogany/poplar Keller shells with re-rings, and do them up to look like original pieces.

Now that I read that back, that seems more logical... LOL.

:P

Now, I understand, Yeah the LL shells aren't very plentyful. the keller shell is a good way to go.

I know of two, yes two Ludwig & Ludwig toms, sitting at the back of my friend's drum shop. They are original, and unrestored. I believe they are 11" and 13" toms, Imperial lugs, calf heads, painted white, still have the tom mounts on them that mount them to the bass drum hoop, mid 1930's vintage I believe. But here's the catch.....they are single-headed toms. They do not appear to ever have had a tacked on bottom head and the lugs are not center mounted or double ended. They are complete, and are in very presentable condition the way they sit.

I can inquire about the price on them if you like.......I'm sure they will probably be fairly reasonable. PM me if they sound like something you can use.

Did you ever find the lugs you were looking for? I have a set of Ludwigs from the 1930's with those lugs. Bass, two toms and snare.
