Ludwig Vintage 22" Bass Drum Head Last viewed: 3 hours ago

From K.O.

The logos on the Ludwig heads are the same sort of vinyl as the aftermarket ones so they will peel off (or any individual part of them can be peeled). In my experience the factory applied ones are usually slightly crooked on the head, another reason to apply your own (although getting it perfectly straight and centered can be tricky). If you're wanting to recreate the look of the originals the most important thing would be the size. These come in various sizes from the various sources but the originals were fairly small. I know Jack Lawton sells the correct size. Others probably do too. Here's one of the decals I made put on an Attack head. If I had any of these decals left I'd send you one but I've used them all up and don't have any of the proper materials on hand to make more.

Thanks for the feedback.

My son and I want to get a 22" Vintage Ludwig BD head for the 1960/1962 WMP Super Classic kit we recently acquired. According to Ludwig, the head is model number LW4222V and the image on the Ludwig site is on the left below. When I go on an online seller like Cascio Interstate, they show LW4222V with the addition of USA under the name and with a greyish color, as shown on the right. When I went onto the Musician's Friend site, the logo on the head pictured looks correct, but a purchaser commented with the following, "it has U.S.A. under the logo which is not on vintage heads. And lastly the most annoying, vintage logo heads were coated, this is not coated, its not even white, its a transparent smooth white head. You can kind of see through it and it looks kind of hazy grey under certain lighting."So, any thoughts on where I can get an accurate (without USA and with proper coating) 60's style 22" Ludwig Vintage BD head would be much appreciated. I see them on a number of kits shown here so I assume they must be available somewhere.

Personally, i'm not a fan of Ludwig stock heads.. Their construction isn't the best and they have to be tuned up quite high in order to achieve a desired tone or pitch.. I think they've taken that into account because now all Ludwig high end series drums will have standard Remo drum heads..Most drummers who use Ludwig will eventually switch them out for Remo or any other preferred drum heads anyway.

Like some members have stated up here, you can always pick up a few vintage logo style decals and place them on your favorite heads. They're durable and are identical the real logos..

Great. Would the Ludwig-60s-Vintage-Repro-Logo-Adhesive-Vinyl-Decal be the best choice for a 22" Super Classic bass drum from 1960-1962?

If you're looking for authenticity, then yes, this would be your best choice. Logo is smaller than current version, but was standard size for all Ludwig bass reso heads for that era, until they switched to the 70s block logo.

Various vendors sell vinyl lettering cut to the right size that you can stick on any head you like. Most vintage Ludwig front heads were smooth white, not coated. The logo was also fairly small. The originals were water slide decals (which would not stick well to coated heads). In the past I have made my own decals using an ink jet printer and decal paper but most folks just get the vinyl ones.I've used Attack smooth white heads for this as they are the least expensive and are similar in construction to the 60's Ludwigs. I can't see paying more for the Ludwig heads with a logo I'm only going to peel off anyhow. I've removed the attack stamp with acetone and added the Ludwig decal. Worked well. Here's a comparison of a vintage logo with one of the new ones that Ludwig sells (this was taken a few years back before they added the "USA").

Removing the Remo logo was quick and easy using Goo-Gone. I believe a similar product like Goof-Off would work as well.
