Ludwing model question Last viewed: 8 hours ago

Hi all,

I have been a lurker here for a while, and I just unearthed my Ludwig silver sparkle kit out of the attic that I've had for about 19 years.

I got the kit when I was about 10 or 11. My dad bought the kit from a co worker, who was an amateur drummer and needed to get rid of his extra kit. At the time (as I remember it anyway) the kit was supposed to be an early 70s silver sparkle Ludwig kit. I have done a very basic amount of research in the last year or so, and it appears to me that it is actually a later 70s kit.

It is a 5 piece kit with a non matching snare. The sizes are 13", 14",18" and 22". The bass drum feet are the 1/2" size, and the badges are the blue and olive tags. I will add some pics tonight and see what kind of feedback all of you have.

One other question I had is... What kind of snare would have been with this kit originally? Also, is this what you would call a "big beat" kit? I cant find what a big beat model really means.

Thanks in advance!

you might have a rock machine setup there, the big beat was a 22/12/13/16 in the late 70's. here is a scan from the 1980 catalog. it shows the big beat with 13/14/18 toms and a 22 or 24 bass drum. looks like its cataloged with a 6.5 supra.

Mike - are those 6-ply shells on that 80's kit? If so, it'll sound -really- good. I love those 6-ply shells for their tone. Resonant drums.
