I rebuilt a WFL a couple of years ago and sold it to Electric Lady Studios. Great player grade drums with newer Luddy lugs, around $800. Imagine with a better kit with the original wrap would go for.
Mahagony drums Last viewed: 6 hours ago
Music grade African mahogany for ply drums? More probably Central and/or South American mahogany. Here's some solid info!http://www.wood-database.com/wood-articles/mahogany-mixups-the-lowdown/
Up thru the 1973 catalog Ludwig did specify that their shells were made from "select African mahogany" and poplar. Of course a lot of the shells they made in this time period contained a ply or two of maple, which is not mentioned. Also, at least 50% of any Ludwig 3 ply shell is the poplar core.
Still those old shells that are mahogany/poplar/mahogany, whether made by Ludwig or Slingerland, seem to have a low down rumble that other drums just don't have. To me that's the 3 ply sound to try to get. The ones with maple mixed in sound fine but I prefer the mahogany ones.
