Just put this together...

I re-finished the mahogany exterior with a couple of coats of walnut.

If the 16 turns out like this, I'll be happy... the bass is done too, just needs hardware put on.

Sounds good..... long sustain....................................................................................... !:)

How did you manage to get a long sustain out of a Slingerland kit? I've had several Slingerlands and although they sounded good, they never had a long sustain. The bearing edges are rounded and there is a lot of shell/head contact. Did you recut them sharper? x-mas3

Gosh no, I wouldn't know how anyway.

I just sanded the edges lightly, waxed em, put on fresh heads and tuned them up nice.

This shell is a little undersized and thin as it used to be wrapped and has been sanded down after taking off the glue residue...... maybe that made some difference ??

Don't know for sure.

Those old mahogany shells have all day sustain. I sent off a early 60s 12" Slingerland shell I got by accident that had incredible sustain and sounded like a small bass drum. This is why I LOVE the thin MIJ shells, they just boom and it lasts all day long.

Nice job, looks great from here, classy and understated, hopefully the wood underneath the 16 will be as nice.As far as the resonation thing goes on vintage drums,I have no exp with slingerlands but I have had a few luddy's with very rounded edges, out of roun, with sketchy bearing edges that still resonated forever,I think some drums just want to resonate.

Coming along........

Have yet to remember where I stashed the badge for the bass.

Thinking about natural maple hoops?
