Hi to all,

Trying to finish up our vintage snare drum that we were able to get from one of the great members of this forum. (14"x10" Ludwig , with rings and grey granitone paint). The last part is the bearing edges. I got the top leveled out and even. I'm now starting on the bottom. The bearing edge is pretty rough but should even out ok. My question is about snare beds. This drum doesn't appear to have ,or ever had any. I know this wasn't Ludwig's greatest time for quality control but I thought I read somewhere that the snare beds were not that critical on this type of drum.Anyone out there that has one of these that can shed some light if their drum has a snare bed? The snare uses the standard snare wires and Ludwig throw off. I can feather a snare bed in if needed but it wouldn't be my first choice. I'm trying to restore this back to it;s original condition as much as possible to show the students the difference between old and new so I don't want to make mods unless this was a Ludwig error. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

post some pics of the bottom of the shell where the snare beds are at? but all snare beds are critical to a snare drum of this type. Yours should have them as long as it was a snare shell that you got?

I have a 70's Ludwig 10X14", granitone interior, marching snare w/ no bed whatsoever. I don't think this was a matter of Ludwig quality control. (In one of the Ludwig books there is mention of the realization, that w/ the dawning of the mylar head, there was not much need for a snare bed. ( My 70's Supraphonic has a very long & very shallow bed, almost imperceptible).

I have seen many marching snares over the years.I find that 50% of them have a snare bed.The ones that did had the P-85 or P-87 strainer on the drum.With the same butt plate you would find on the Ludwig's 5.5x14 snares ete.The snare wires were hold on by string.But if the snare wires were gutt wire that run pass the head no snare beds were on the drums....Mikey

To all,

Thanks for all the replies. After going thru the drum and checking the bottom edges I found that there is a small dip. I didn't see it until I smoothed and leveled the bearing edges, got the heads and snares on (Grovers) and it really sounds great.(will post pictures soon) The only problem left is I have found that the bottom snare hoop is bent way out of round so its hard to tune because the hoop wants to slip over the head lip at 2 positions between lugs even at low tuning. the top hoop and head work fine. I mounted the top hoop on the bottom to make sure the drum wasn't at fault and it worked fine. I believe the Gibraltar units will work but does anyone have an old 14" 8 lug Ludwig marching snare hoop laying around that they want to get rid of reasonably? I would like to keep this drum all original for the student clinics but cost is a major consideration at the moment.PM me if anyone has one and thanks to everyone for all the help!

You can probably put it back into (near) round yourself. Just apply pressure gradually, test the fit, apply pressure again, lather, rinse, repeat.

my 15x10 had no snare beds either, I think its pretty typical.

As for the bent hoop, just find a good workable replacement and play the snot out of it!

I was amazed at how sensitive mine was.
