Who knew this? I thought he always just played drums that were newly supplied by Gretsch. So what is he doing playing these?

When he heard the Rogers he just could not help himself!
I heard or read somewhere that Mickey was a righty but, for some reason, learned and preferred left-handedness. I'm almost sure that he used his left foot on the bass. Has anyone any confirmation ? Just curious. Thanks.

Yes he was a Gretsch man!!
The pic Drumaholic posted was a very early 1965 promo pic and Gretsch had not yet signed on as the musical sponsor. I'm sure they borrowed that set from a nearby music store for the photo shoot...looks like a Rogers.
Mickey plays right handed, but on a left handed set.
He uses his left foot on the bass drum, BUT uses his left hand on the snare and right hand on the cymbals. I've seen a few guys play this way. Sort of left handed but backwards.
I've met Mickey a couple of times and asked him about this and he told me thats just how he was taught.
I LOVE the Champagne Gretsch set that he used on the show.
Gretsch was the official Monkees instrument Sponsor. They made a TON of money by selling guitars and drums to aspiring musicians who watched the show.
I started playing Gretsch in the early 1970s because of Mickey. When i told Mickey that he just smiled. I'm sure 10,000 drummers have told him that over the years.
And he played Istanbul K's too.
He did play Rogers. His black wrap kit was Rogers(its in the "Daydream Believer" video),and he also toured with a Slingerland kit,the kit that had DRUM in large red letters painted on the bass drum.
