Mid 60's Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Last viewed: 5 hours ago

Hi, I picked up a Ludwig Supraphonic 5 x 14 recently with keystone badge and serial number 116863 which is in the range for 1965 from what I've found. It has the baseball bat style tone control with red felt rectangle muffler. The shell does not have any dates or stickers on the inside but it has a brass cast to it. The drum is fairly heavy and the hoops have spots where someone has scratched off the chrome to reveal what looks to be brass. It has the P-83 snare strainer.

Does this sound like a brass shell drum with original parts?

It is in overall good condition so I would like to know a ball park value.

that is a 65 drum. usually don't find brass models at that serial number range. anything is possible with Ludwig though. there are several questions to ask, but to start out, does it have crimped snare beds?

Those drums were chrome plated using a technique called "triple chrome plating"

The first layer is copper,then white nickel,and then a layer of chrome.

What you're seeing is probably the layer of copper,which can have a brassy cast to it,depending on the alloy used.

Generally 60's Super Ludwig 400/402,brass shelled drums were all pre serial numbered,and had crimped snare beds.

If you look at the bearing edges,they should also curve slightly back toward the shell,as oppose to Ludalloy supraphonic 400/402 bearing edges,which remain straight,with no curve at all.

Lastly,brass drums have no pitting or "supra acne" like lots of aluminum drums do.

The "magnet test",will reveal nothing since both brass and aluminum are both non ferrous metals.It will tell you however if those rims are COB or COS.

More than likely,your drum is aluminum.My 65 supra is pretty heavy too,but it's aluminum with chrome over brass rims,hence the extra weight.

Post some clear pics.Somebody will take a look.Even the brass pre serial drums are going for under a grand these days.
