I've been experimenting with a tuning technique which I find produces fantastic results on these old cheap sets. Basically the key is using very thin heads (Diplomats, or Genera Resonants) on both the bottom and top of the toms.

It seems to produce superior tonal definition and boosts overall resonance. It's a bit tricky because there seems to be a fairly narrow band of pitches (generally fairly high) at which you find a sort of perfect "sweet point" in the tuning.

But it seems to make these cheap old drums sing like multi-thousand dollar vintage name brands. Has anybody else tried this, what kind of results did you get?

they're all a little different. I have a Majestic De-luxe that sounds GREAT with coated Emperors and clear Ambassador resos. Got a clear Remo Powerstroke 3on the 20" kick, with the original coated SoundMaster head on front with a felt strip and no other muffle. Probably one of the best bass drums I own!

I have used Diplomats that way with great results on my vintage Ludwigs. I think the reason they work a little better is due to the fact that they are thinner and thus conform to the unevenness of those old roundover edges. I think they seal better in other words.

Hey that is a really good point, though I also use them on my much more modern Slingerland Jam session kit (2008). The tonal quality is totally different on those, but noentheless sounds magnificent. Those drums are deeper (12") and with the Dips and an added bit of moongel or a tone control ring have the most pleasant buttery smooth resonance I have ever heard.
