Hi again

How is it possible to tell the difference between the Cabria and the XPK kits?

Looking at the pic attached, any idea roughly what year this would be and what model? According to the badge, it looks like a Made in England kit.

Again, any info would be great

Cheers

Phil

I think they are from the 80s, not sure the model, not real familiar with premiers.

The later models of both had different colour badges.. The earlier series ones like yours, XPK had the long lugs whilst Cabria had single paired lugs.... This is my understanding..

Cheers

From what I know the difference between XPK and APK is that the APK is wrapped and the XPK is lacquered. Looking at the lugs I think it's from the late 80's.

When the APKs were introduced in the late 70s they were intermediate. not entry level drums. They became entry level in the 80`s. From this period the XPKs are lacquered and APKs wrapped (with the exception of XPK Special Edition kits which were wrapped in some weird psychedelic pearl and had some wonky shells underneath). Then came the APK/Cabria, which eventually became the Cabria. I agree that these look like late 80s APks, which I am fond of. I`m not sure as to what period they were painted black on the insides. Maybe someone can clarify that please. I believe that these particular APKs are in Ontario and that I have seen them for sale for a while (weird mic holder is a give-away). I think I remember they were being sold as 70s Premiers, though they are definately not. At the right price they would make a great gig kit

PS:After proof-reading for weird grammar and syntax I just wanted to clarify that though I used the term entry-level for both APKs and Cabrias the Entry level APKs from the 80s are far superior IMHO. Also, Longjohn, I don`t think low-mass lugs differentiated XPKs and Cabrias, but was a general change in lug design in the post Yamaha later 90s corresponding to the Artist Heritage series. I think pretty much all the lines w the exception of the Genista got them. The transitional APK/Cabria probably used up left-over high-tension lugs, though I`m just guessing.
