Thanks guys,

The Ludwig toms need a few tension rods, one 13" and one 16" hoop.

The bass only came with one hoop and it's not in very good shape.

It also needs tension rods.

My plan is to make the best kit I can out of both sets and then fill in the blanks later.

Let me run this by you guys to get some opinions.

What I have here are 2 mostly complete drums sets.

But, only one of them is a matching set.

Kit #1 that came to me is as follows.

Bass drum 1957 WFL with mahogany shell. (with unfortunate hole in it)

Snare drum 1958 WFL 8 lug classic.

Tom one is a 12x7 blue and olive badge from the 70's. Hurting

Tom two is a 13x9 from about 1968 or so by the serial #. (shell is cracked at the mount)

Floor tom is a 16x16 from about 1965 by the serial #. (missing bottom hoop)

Kit #2 is as follows.

Bass drum Keystone badge from about 1965 somewhere. (no holes but missing front hoop and tension rods)

No snare.

Tom one is a 13x9 of the same vintage. (missing bottom hoop and tension rods)

Tom two is a 16x16 of the same vintage. (missing bottom hoop and tension rods)

So, the question is:

Should I use the WFL kick (with a hole in it) and the WFL snare with the Keystone toms and make a set?

Or should I just restore the complete Keystone set and maybe search out for some WFL toms?

Right now the WFL kick and snare are ready to play.

I don't want to take the hoops off the WFL kick and put them on the Keystone kick.

I do not have a Keystone snare.

I have enough parts to make the toms from Kit 2 complete. (they are in better shape than the toms from kit 1)

Either way I think they will be great.

Thoughts? :)

First thing I'd do is set up with a drink and just stare at those shells in that first picture.Mitch

Aren't the possibilities just grand with new old stuff?

I vote keystone! Build a buddy set! Aren't both floortoms '65?

9x13

16x16

16x16

14x22

And find a cob supra!

WFL should be with WFL. Sell those to fund the ludwig set. Same with the b/o badged drum. SOMEBODY out there is looking for those, I'm sure.

A "buddy rich" configuration would be at least different then all the super classics out there, and might be worth more if they are to be resold. Post a pic, Lets see how the two floortoms look side by side.

For now I would take the nicest floor Tom and 9"x13" Tom and at least make a playable set. See which bass drum looks the best after cleaning the one without the hoops and go with that one for now. If the one without the hole looks and matches the toms best, borrow the hoops from the other bass drum. Then you will have a complete playable set that looks good, and fix up and restore the others with parts, etc as you can. Then you can eventually get the sets straightened out. I would consider selling the B/O badge Tom to finance missing parts.

Thanks for all the responses guys.

I appreciate the input from all of you.

I think what I'm going to do for now is to restore the best toms I have first to make a playable set.

Then try to find some hoops for the Keystone bass and re-unite it with the best toms.

As far as the snare goes, this WFL snare looks and sounds great.

I'm not going to buy my friend a snare.

I wish I had some matching WFL toms.

I'm sure I could search around and find some eventually.

I'm sure he's not going to sell the WFL bass and snare.

I would tell him to just hang on to them.

Or let me have them. :D

I fixed the link in my sig btw.

Your stave drums look spectacular! I like how your web page makes the process "seem" so simple. If I were to try that I would just end up with Lincoln Logs.

Here's a couple of shots of the ft shells.

I finished the 13x9 with the best shell.

It looks and sounds great.
