Mounting 70s Slinger Toms Closer Last viewed: 7 minutes ago

Im sure this has come up before , but wondered if anyone knew a hardware piece that would allow an early 70s slingy set of 13" toms to be mounted closer together - on the bass drum without using a separate stand - wondered if something from another era slinger or another manufacture could be adapted/used to get my toms an inch or so apart instead of the 3-4 " they are now - thanks

If I could see a picture of your tom mounting hardware, I could answer your question. If it's the double Set O Matic mount, that's a simple fix if you get a Super Set O Matic mount that goes in the same receiver on the bass drum. The Super Set O Matic has two separate arms that can be positioned to place your two toms as close together as you want them to be.

Before you race out and buy a SSM... Where is your bass drum mount located on the BD.. For a comfortable location of the toms the mount should be mounted far forward on the BD towards the front hoop... not back towards the batter head, even centered can be a problem.. (Eg; you end up sitting so far back you can barely reach the pedal) ... Check out lots of images of the SSM mounted on various size kits..

Cheers

Longjohn is correct … here is one of my kits with a bass drum that was originally drilled for a regular S-O-M. It works for me because I like my toms at a fairly steep angle which makes up for them being in closer. But you'll see that the Super S-O-M mount WILL get the toms pretty close together.

They show up on eBay every now and then in the $75-$100 range.

I've never had an issue with the super setomatic being too close when center mounted. One thing I used to do when I used two mounted toms was use the stubby double arm as one of the single arms as it would set one tom a little further back.

With the Super SM the size of the BD also comes into play.. The larger the BD the more difficult it is to get a good angle on the toms. Big difference between a 20 & a 26.. When they first released it, they were shipping it out with those kits that were fitted with centre mounted BD receivers. Later the position was moved forward to around an inch back from the front hoop. So most of the SSM kits that you see are drilled forward.

They don't come cheap, so I am just saying check it out first.. It never worked for me..

Cheers
