Music?? Last viewed: 6 minutes ago

My playing has a close connection with church music. That is where I got started 37 years ago. Ive never had formal lessons. The person who got me going was a so-so drummer at best, and from the beginning I was playing with live music. There was a whole lot of "like this, not like that" moments. For that first two years I had unrestricted use of a 1967 Rogers four piece, and looking at the one picture I have of that, I believe it was an 18, 12, 14. I wish I had those today. In 1979, I bought my first kit, Rogers. I owned one set, and one snare for the next twenty years.

Ive played in church, traditional and contemporary styles, in a few gospel groups that fit the four fat white guys southern gospel quartet style of music, a lot of old school country, lite rock, blues, inspriational, etc. Currently I play with a group that does a lot of gospel, traditional and contemporary, country... basically the same kind of stuff Ive played forever. We gig regularly for retirement folks in managed living. Retirement homes dont pay much, if anything, but it is a very enjoyable experience.

Right now...

I own six Rogers sets, 64 Cleveland, 66 Gray Dayton, 77 Big R (my first kit), 78 Big R, and an 83 Big R XP8 in jazz sizes. Thirty four snare drums, most of which are Rogers Dynasonic, Rogers Superten, Rogers Powertones. I have Supras, Acrolites, a Supersensitive and a Supersensitive black beauty. A couple drums from Ayotte and even an old Student Deluxe Slingerland. Nearly everything is in excellent plus condition.

And I play everything out.

I play Punk, Metal, Rock, Blues, and a whole lot of stuff in between that is yet to be figured out. I mostly played my Gretsch Catalina Birch kit. As cheap as it is, really it has been a great workhorse and has held up extremely well to the abuse I gave it. More recently I worked out a deal for my first set of vintage Pearls...I plan to use em across the board. I often warm up for the blues band with some metal riffs to wake up...not yet been through a metal show though. I wonder how they will fare?

Now that's cool. Would love to see that Rogers kit and your band in action.

I play as a hobby am not much of a collector but love top 40 radio of the 60s and 70s. Beatles of course but disco, and those one hit wonder tunes are fun - The Night Chicago Died, Who ho ho It's Magic (Pilot), fun stuff light that. Nothing too serious.

Rock, Blues mostly. Played in a few Hendrix/SRV power trio bands the last couple of decades. I only play and own vintage American drums and like the Ploughman, when gigs come up, I play them all out. Vintage drums are meant to be played/heard, not rat-holed in cases in somebody's basement.

I'm all about making a joyous noise!

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I have discovered that the music I play on my set has to be changed. I have recently added a lot to my collection. I combined three sets into one along with orphan concert toms and roto toms. I have had to add a cage and have to now relearn how to play it all, with out getting over whelmed. I do loook forward to the challenge.
