It's a '66 Slingerland Modern Solo going to my niece in Atlanta...

Should I nest or just pack each drum seperate... does it save money to nest?

What about insurance? I was thinking maybe $800. I'm sending her the whole shooting match... 5 piece kit (all matching), yellow jacket pedal, B8 hats and a crash/ride with stands and a throne.

Is UPS the way to go or are there better options..?

It's 10 hours.. should I just take a day off and drive the thing down there?

Any hints/ideas are greatly appreciated!!

It cost me a little less than thirty bucks(or close to that) to ship two cymbal stands, a snare stand and a hi-hat stand to FFR a little while ago, via Post Office.

This doesn't answer your whole question, but it's a start!

I'd say it'd be best to ship them nested (wrapped nicely of course) but in a few separate packages. It's still cheaper and safer than driving.

Ive heard that Greyhound has a super cheap option but you gotta drop at the office and she needs to pick up too...The best way to avoid metal to wood damage would be to remove all the harware of the shells and ship the shells nicely wrapped with bubble wrap and put all the hardware on a small box (the box should fit inside the shells). Use styrofoam peanuts and bubble wrap generously. Its time consuming but its worth it.
