My New Leedy Acquisition.....Info help Pleae Last viewed: 19 hours ago

I just received my latest acquisition yesterday. The drums are a SlingerLeedy

matched set and a companion Shelly Manne snare drum. All three drums (14x22, 16x16, and 9x13) are unfaded Champagne Sparkle. The interiors are natural Mahogany with date stamps of January and February of 1965. The indicators all point to the three drums leaving the factory together. My question to the mavens here concerns the badge/no badge difference among those three drums. The bass drum and floor tom have the blue oval badges from Chicago 48 Illinois. The mounted tom has never had a badge or an air hole. Was it very common for toms within the same "family" of drums that were shipped together to be a mixture of badged and not badged? Might this set be a manifestaion of the house cleaning during the last few months of SlingerLeedy drums?

The snare drum is a beauty, too. It is a slightly faded Pink Glass Glitter Shelly Manne5.5x14" model (Radio King with prettier lugs). The badge is the laquered unpainted brass oval badge that is from the earliest (mid 1950's Slingy years) It's a very close match from a few feet away. I've got a set of PureSound Radio King snares on the way to me as I type this.

The front bas drum head will be end up being one of the following:

* Leedy logo on the Fiberskin currently on the drum

* Leedy logo on a Radio King calf head that I own

* Leedy logo n shiny white head

Or, I might just transfer the pictured rockabilly tribute head on to the Champagne Sparkle Leedy bass drum.

I thought there was a time period (60's if I recall what I was told correctly) when Slingerland did not put vent holes or badges on there rack toms. I assume Slingerland would have done the same thing to there Leedy brand drums as they did to the Slingerland brand. This would lines up with the dates on your drums. I'm sure one of the Slingerland experts will know and can either confirm this or tell you I'm full of it, as I'm just recalling a conversation I had with another drummer a while back about his Slingerland kit. That's a nice looking kit BTW.

Slingerland at the end did not put badges or vent holes on some of the Leedy drums that came out in the market. I had a set that came with no badges yet all the heads had the Leedy logo and hardware on them. Fred Gretsch Got sloppy towards the end when discontinued Leedy.

That's a nice set you have there.

It's being seen more and more that Leedy by Slingerland was hit and miss. The set below is a 1965 with badges on all drums and maple/poplar/maple shells. The 8x12 has the typical light brown paint inside but the FT and BD are bare wood.

Wasn't Slingerland through using the mahogany shells by then, even if it was going to be wrapped?

So far, my hunch is being confirmed about the inconsistencies within a drum set's components near the end of the SlingerLeedy era. Even with the inconsistencies, I love the Leedy drums made during the brief period of Slingerland ownership. Here's what the set looks like now with my tribute to DJ Fontana reso head on it.

Slingerland/Leedy drums were long gone by the time Fred Gretsch bought Slingerland(1980).

I was going to post that same comment. But, I sometimes come across as a "know it all". There's a hell of a lot that I don't know. Fred Gretsch held on to the Leedy name for years when he sold the Slingerland company. I wish that Gretsch would start making full drum sets with the Leedy Deco lugs. But. I'm probably typical of Leedy lovers. I don't think I'd buy a new set. The old ones are just right for me.

It was Fred Gretsch That dumped a lot of stuff in the Market when he brought the Slingerland company. Still is at times you will see he put snare shells on E Bay under the name ''himonwry'' this is Fred Gretsch and also uses other names. Were would You find Today a Radio king drum shell Untapped or a Slingerland Shell with no drilling in mint condition he has a warehouse of stuff and dumps guitars parts drums untouched every so offend.

Good for Fred. And, terrific for people who want the items that he's selling. What would you propose he do with the parts? Give them to the Salvation Army?
