i think you did well on it. stuff like that is great to find for the collection. my vistalite combos still have the original plastic lugs on them. the educators had a little bit of this and that on them if i recall. hopefully bermuda will see this and chime in about his kit.

Here's the link to my Educator kit, I felt it deserved its own page: http://bermudaschwartz.com/edu

Never during Ludwig's history of mixing & matching leftover parts was there a more egregious example than the very short-lived Educator line. I noted the anomalies on that page.

I also have a plastic Educator snare, with the plastic Combo lugs. I also happen to have an Educator 16" floor tom that matches the kit above, and it has the Combo lugs as well. So it's hard to know which lug is actually correct for the Educators, overlapping parts was so common.

They are rare, but more of a curiosity than they are desirable. I'm not sure about the value of the snare in today's market, mine was $60 or $70 from a DFO member a few years ago. But on ebay, to a wider audience of collectors, who knows?

The "Educator" was part of a student snare kit. It most likely did have the plastic lugs originally and someone fitted the metal lugs to make it somewhat usable. The shell is a nylon type of plastic material and will not take much tension before it will colapse. I had a combo version of one of these last year that I got for what I thought was reasonable money at the time. I got it because it looked so similar to Black Panther. To be honest, as a drum, its useless. As a conversation piece that sits on a shelf, its wonderful. Rare, yes. Useful. no. Collectable, yes. Valuable, no.

My first set was a Ludwig Educator Series. Purchased at Manny's Music in NYC December 1978. I sold the set in 1985. Shouldn't have but rent was due although I still have the snare. I also have the receipt somewhere. I'll check and let everyone know what they cost. My set was wood not plastic. BUt the lugs were and initially kept breaking. I still have the bag of plastic lugs. I was so upset as a kid I wrote to Ludwig and complained. They sent a complete set of metal lugs and I never had a problem again. I may also have the apology letter. If you look at Bermuda's set mine was exactly the same.

Hey, if I call Ludwig and complain,, well,, mabye I will get new lugs, great idea! thanks!!!!

Yes mine are plastic (lugs) and I am afraid to tighten the heads down. It will be a real challenge to find a matching snare for my kit, but , thats waht we do here.
