My new Slingerlands and questions Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hey all.

Newbie here. I did my first restore over the summer (1967 Ludwig Silver Sparkle Hollywood...still makes me tear up a little).

My second is this slingy I picked up a month ago. I've polished the wood, cleaned every bit of metal -still need to fix the zoomatic (just need nut shell) and I need some tension rod type screws for the mounted toms. All pieces original-I'm the third owner.

Need some help/thoughts.

*I date this as a 1975 kit -serials 217xxx on all badges. Does this sound right? Black and silver Niles badges.

*Is the wood finish walnut or mahogany?

*The mounted toms have some rash on them. I don't want to re finish the drums because I love the color- and fixes or leave it alone?

Given the problems (rash on mounted toms and hoops slightly warped but totally functional. What would you price this at -comes with original hardward (hh, pedal, snare stand, cymbal stand)?

thanks!

Hi flamflange77 - nice kit!

That serial number should put you close to 1975. I checked using the Slingerland serial number timeline on this site (go to the Slingerland drums link in the Vintage Drum Identification section above). As for the finish, looks more like walnut to me (at least in those two pictures of the mounted toms with no flash used on the camera), which was offered for the second time by Slingerland beginning around 1976 (according to Rob Cook's Slingerland Book).

I would leave rash on the toms alone, but only because I'm not quite sure how you would go about restoring them.

Not sure of the value - but really nice looking- how do they sound? Is that a Krupa Sound King snare? If so how do you like it? I've been thinking about picking one up.

Excellent post. I've stared at these shots for several minutes and I'm still undecided. I've got an early 70s mahogany kit. In one of the pics, it looks a little like mine. In another pic, it's darker. I honestly don't know.

Awesome thanks!

James,

I don't think it is a Krupa but I did the magnet test and it is COB. What would make it a Krupa? They sound gorgeous tapping them in my apartment and need to take them to my studio for a full whirl. Very resonant clear tone that is warm-easy to tune.

Yep, it is, and I like 'em.

The prices on them seem to be low at the moment. I've scooped a few of them up -- 5" with Zoomatic and 6½" TDR -- for not much more than $100 each.

I leaning toward the Mahogany finish as well.

Even under the set-o-matic it looks lighter than the walnut finish.....

That's judging by these pics with these wrinkled eyes...:)

It would be the New Rock Outfit by the heavier duty hardware.

I have it's sister Modern Solo Outfit in Sparkling Red Pearl that came with the lighter duty flat stands, which is the only difference between the two.

Looks like , yes, it would be 1975 by the serials.....

I'm seeing Walnut finishes offered in the catalogs in 1973, despite Rob Cook's reference on page 136 of his book; and his pic of the Walnut looks closer than the Mahogany to this set........... hmmm.......

Maybe some naturally lighted pics would help?

Value.... You said cymbal stand instead of stands, so one is missing... otherwise a complete catalog set.... even with the rash on the two toms I would venture $750 with the hardware items... they are worth $150 or so.

Darn shame about the rash.... I would go $900 with hardware or so if that were not the case.

Killa set...... I bet they sound great !!

Nice set, from the grain on the wood I'd say it's walnut stain on maple shells.
