My new Slingerlands Last viewed: 16 hours ago

I just picked up a set of older Slingerlands for a reasonable price. I don't know much about Slingerland, but I stumbled across them on CL, they looked cool and were priced reasonably, so I jumped on them quickly without doing much research.

After getting them home I looked them up here. As it turns out, it appears to be a 1970-ish model 73N "Jam Session" kit that is 100% complete as shown in the attached catalog listing, down to the sticks and brushes, except for the paint - mine is blue and silver. Everything is in very good condition except for the cymbal - it looks like someone tried to sand the tarnish off of it, and it looks terrible.

I'll post some photos as soon as I can shoot some, but until then, my question is: what type of cymbal would Slingerland have sold with this kit? The one in the catalog listing looks to be the same size as the one I got, and since virtually everything else I got is identical to the catalog listing, I suspect the cymbal is original also. But there's no info on the cymbal in the listing, and the catalog page that does have cymbal info isn't posted here.

Thanks.

From Rich K.

If the cymbal isn't a Zildjian, it could be a Pasha or Kashian...

I've only given it a quick once-over, but I don't see any brand name stamped or inked into the cymbal at all. It's possible it got sanded off - whoever did this really seemed bent on destoryiing it.

I'm not looking at it now, but there is something stamped in ink still visible on an un-sanded area on top of the cymbal: some small, now-indecipherable letters, and 16", obviously corresponding to the 16 inch size of the cymbal. Does this ring any bells (pun intended!) with anyone?

Pictures coming tonight after I get home from work.

Good thing they stopped before they "cleaned" the rest of the kit.I really like those slingy 6 lug snares, great blues shuffle and second line snares IMO.I have seen more of the blue duco finish drums than any other duco finish so if you are inclined should be able to find a floor tom to go with it.

A couple more shots.

I really like the compactness of this set. I haven't played them yet - the snare needs a new snare head (all the heads are still original, BTW), but if these sound as good as I think they will based on a few hits, they're going to get some use.

Also, on closer examination, I fund that the cymbal has "Japan" stamped on the underside just near the edge. So it seems likely that it's some sort of cheap replacement for whatever the original was that came with this kit. Anyone have any idea what that original might have been? Or maybe a link to the cymbal page from a 1970-ish Slingerland catalog?

Thanks.
