Mystery Gretsch snare Last viewed: 1 hour ago

So last year I picked up a 60's brass Gretsch snare from a yard sale for $25. I took some pics and posted on the Forum only to receive a heap of scorn from people claiming it was spray painted, etc. Spent some time on it and took some new pictures. It has your standard 4160 configuration and hardware. I can understand how some misguided person could sand it down to "see the brass". But, it's brass outside and inside in every crevice and fold. Not a trace of chrome anywhere..just solid brass!!! There are some faint scratches on the outside but not inside. Could it be possible that Gretsch actually released a plain brass snare? I'm real curious about this drum..grateful for input!

Chemical stripping normally removes all traces of paint and plating. It's maybe possible someone tried to wire wheel the chrome off. Then had it stripped. The area around the badge looks like it was avoided unless the pics don't show the scratch marks. Hard to say for sure. I remember back in the 70's to 80's we had local places that did chemical stripping on everything from wood to metal. Mr Strip It was one such place here in CT. Hydrocloric acid dip is also pretty common to strip chrome plate off brass. Could have been a DIY job in that case as well. Either way for $25 you have a way cool snare drum!

Good deal either way, the badge alone should catch $50-$100 if it were in good shape, but I think I see scratches on it also?

I can at least tell you this, the grommet is factory so the badge has not ever been removed.

I like it! Looking for something like that, myself. Great score.
