Need a 16" floor tom for my downbeat kit Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hey guys. I joined the forum a few years ago when my father in law gifted to me, my first beautiful drum set. It is a 1965 Ludwig Downbeat Kit. The original thread is here http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=11133 It comes with the 20" bassdrum, 14" floor tom, 12" rack tom, and the 4" downbeat snare. The kit is complete and all shells are serial siblings :) They are wrapped in original champagne sparkle.

Now here is my want add:

I want to add a 16" floor tom to this set up. I just started playing three years ago when this kit was given to me, so Im not the greatest by any means. Really, Im a guitar player! I just can't help but having so much DAMN fun on these drums, that I think I want to really get into it and add it to my musical talent arsenal. I love ROCK! Beautifully, raw, gritty, nasty ROCK n ROLL. I also love the double floor tom configuration and it just feels good to me for my style. I know someone out there has a 16" floor tom that will go with this kit. It doesn't matter what wrap is on it, because I can just buy some to match the set really, but it does have to be the same drum. I want it to be right with the rest of the drums, sonically speaking. I know Ludwig had another kit like this called Clubdate or SuperClassic i think in the same years that just had a bigger bassdrum, snare, and tom size. I think I want the 16" from one of those kits. Maple. Good shape. Fair price. Anyone help me out?

Well, as far as "just buying some wrap to match"...not really much out there right now in the "correct" color match for the 60s C/S. You see, they used to use real copper and silver flakes in the wrap. Today they use plastic chips and it is nowhere near the exact match. From across the room it looks OK, but from 5-10 feet you will see it is plainly mismatched.

However, you should have no problem finding a good, clean C/S 16" matching tom in the correct era, 3 ply maple shell, just keep an eye open here and on ebay, they pop up often.

Was what you quoted and replied with " I've heard not..... " Sorry. I thought you meant that you've heard that no one has a 16" floor tom around for sale. Didn't realize you were onto the matching of wrap color.

Ooh is that the downbeat kit without the snare? Or the bigger kit?

That would be sweet, to find that floor tom! Hell, it would be cool to just buy the whole thing really and switch up the config for different gigs.
