Need Help Determining Value of a Gretsch Round Badge Kit Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Loading...

Hello All,

I recently acquired this Gretsch round badge kit at a yard sale. The guy I bought them from was the original owner and said he had them about forty years. They are a burgundy sparkle color (not sure of the exact name) and the sizes are as follows:

5.5 x 14 snare - complete etc for piece of strainer

12 x 8 mounted tom - complete

13 x 9 mounted tom - missing one rim

16 x 16 floor tom - complete

14 x 20 bass drum - missing one hoop (I have the claws) and also missing one leg maybe more too I'm not sure

Here is a link to some pictures

They are missing some parts and do need some work to be playable again and although I would love to own a vintage Gretsch kit I have neither the time or the money to invest in them. I really purchased them with the idea of reselling.

If anyone could offer any advice as to what they might be worth or a resource(s) that I could use to get more info that would be great.

Thanks in advance for any help

Looks like a GREAT project... man... value is tough on that kit. Round badge Gretsch kits seem to be all over the place.

Hope an expert jumps in here with the 411... I'm curious to see what the answers is.

I saw a really rough round badge kit in green satin flame in the consignment section at Columbus Pro Percussion it was marked at $1800 (I think) but it sat there forever.

And Welcome

Not a Guru... just interested..

beautiful project

not a whole lot of work needed

value is tough to call

there are some missing pieces that will need to be replace such as the Pratt system ...along with some other pieces

the micro sensitive strainer looks to be in rough shape as well and may need to be at least partly replaced ....snare is also missing the key holder

but the badges are there (aside from bass drum which you can replace) the floor tom legs are there and the rail consolette is there which is a huge plus

the one tom has a stop sign badge and probably did not come with the set......although there are some kits that came with mixed badges during the badge transition period ...but that tom has hex head screws which says it was made post Brooklyn era so that tom I would say is not part of the kit

the rail consolette says this was a single tom kit

all 4 round badge pieces look to be in quite nice shape

overall a nice kit ....you scored

the round badge pieces look to be mid to late 60s judging by the 5 digit serial number starting with a 6 ....but it still has round flat head screw driven screws .....so probably between 66 - 68

good luck with it ....you found a diamond in the rough for sure

just heads up you have one of the rarest colors in gretsch drums. the hole in the snare drum is for the snap in drum key holder it is not a extra hole and they are still available. you bought one rare monkey.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Thanks everyone for the welcome and the info. Unfortunately for me at this time I need the money more than the kit so I am planning on reselling and I turned to this forum to help me with that.

My girlfriend is a part time photographer so today we are going to set up her studio equipment and take some really good pictures. I will post a link to them once they are done.

The set came with a small bag of hardware and the snap in drum key is there although I am not sure if it is complete I will post pictures of that as well.

Also if anyone can suggest anything specific to get a picture of that would be great.

Welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing your set.

As others have said, the color is not common, so the set definitely has more potential value than if it was in a more common color. I think that the ultimate value to some may hinge on how original the set appears to be. The paper label on the bass and the size of the vent hole indicates that it once had a round badge. From what I can tell, it probably dates to the 1965-66 time frame based upon its serial number. Ignoring the 13 tom and just looking at the Round Badge drums - The 12/16/20 configuration is certainly not unheard of, but is not the more typical 13/16/22 or 12/14/20. I have a 12/16/20 set in blue glass glitter which appears to have come together and some prefer the spread between them to the typical configurations. The matching model 4157 snare is definitely a plus and has significant value by itself or as part of the set.

I would be interested in knowing if the other serial numbers are reasonably close to the one you provided for the bass. Although not a guarantee either way, it is some indication of whether the set may have come together originally.

My advice - If you are needing the money, I would suggest you do a decent cleaning with mild soap and not much water, take lots of good pictures and list it in the "For Sale" section without trying to trace down the parts. It is certainly attractive as-is to someone looking for a restoration project. You should definitely picture the parts bag so that people know what they will need to hunt down and what is included. If you decide to try to make it complete before selling, the parts are available, although they are often not cheap.

I know my eyes ain't as good as they once were and the pics are dark but the badge on that rack tom looks too oblong and maybe has a few too many sides to be round. Also that wrap is one of my favorite Gretsch finishes. Great find!

Believe it or else!
