Need help with these Ludwigs Last viewed: 7 hours ago

Hey friends!

I'm interested in buying this kit, but I'm needing some help. Not sure if it's legit, but I guess thats why I'm on this forum after all. :)

The serial on these is a 507XXX which leaves me thinking these would have been made in 1967 from my research.

They have white painted interiors(no date stamp inside, but paint looks old), white felt baseball bat mufflers, and what looks like a Black Oyster rewrap. Didn't Ludwig wraps at that time get glued to the wood before it was bent, so it would be lapped under the shell? Maybe I'm crazy, but I thought they were.

This could potentially be a legitimate kit, with the exception of the rewrap. I just wasn't sure because of the white interiors with no stamps and the fact that the old wrap wasn't lapped under the shell. I am mostly looking for some help with seeing if it could be all original with these circumstances, minus the wrap.

I'm grateful for any help! baby crawl2

One reason I feel like they're the real deal is the sound. They sound like you would expect from a 60's Ludwig, and again, the white interior paint looks old. Paranoid drummers, as usual. Cool Dude

the wrap should be in the scarf of the shell, It isn't unusual for no date stamp to be inside, the paint would be white, look at the grommets for tampering?

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

When you say scarf, do you mean where the wrap continues into the shell? It's not, it was wrapped after the shell was constructed. I've seen other Ludwigs of this era like this, but I wasn't sure if it was uncommon. hmm...

Ludwig started wrapping the shells after forming them sometime around 1968 or so at about the same time they went to clear interiors, but there could be some overlap involved with white interiors. The white interiors with white felt BB mufflers would be right.

Definitely a rewrap though. That's not authentic Oyster Black Pearl. Nothing wrong with that as long as you're paying player grade prices for them. They'll sound just like any other Ludwigs of the era regardless of what wrap they have on them.

Thanks for the info! My buddy was asking about $850 or so. I feel like $650 might be more reasonable in this situation, but I don't want to be rude about it of course. I think I'd be likely to pay more if I knew the shells were original at least, but its hard to say.

Well, to be honest I don't think anyone is making fake Ludwig 3 ply drums so they're bound to be the real deal. Now there is the potential that they were pieced together instead of being a "factory" kit which makes them less valuable in the eyes of some people...but the rewrap makes that a moot point anyhow. Really the rewrap makes just about any detail alterations (such as repainted interiors) unimportant since the people that really care about originality to that degree won't want the drums anyhow due to the rewrap.

As long as they tune up and look and sound nice to you then they'd be fine as long as you were satisfied with that and weren't overpaying for them.
