need parts/advice to refurbish a 70's Ludwig Acrolite snare Last viewed: 46 minutes ago

Veteran pro guitar player here...have recently acquired some vintage drum gear I'm trying to rehabilitate for my home studio. Project number 1 - I have a mid 70's acrolite snare shell. No hardware, lugs, hoops, snare, throw, nothing. Just a shell, and a dirty one at that.

Anybody have advice on this - best place to source parts, any possibility at all of doing some one stop shopping for all the parts, advice on "how to", or "definitely DON'T do this"?

Newbie...so would appreciate any help!

Thanks,

Chris

The parts you need will cost much more than simply buying a complete drum from the same period! You can pick up a nice Acro for anywhere from $75 to $200 depending on condition and period made. The parts you need, hoops, lugs, strainer, butt plate, snares, tension rods and a set of heads will easily cost you over $150. May as well buy a complete one in good working order.

Welcome to VDF!

Too many great drums to list here!

Hmmm....then maybe the next question is "Who wants to buy an Acrolite shell?".

You can find all the parts you will need at Drum Factor Direct (www.drumfactorydirect.com), of course they won't be Ludwig. Actually, if you watch ebay, or Goodwill (www.shopgoodwill.com/listings/listByCat.asp?catID=188&ending=Items), or ask they guys and gals here (WTB), you can probably get a complete Acrolite in good shape that needs nothing for about the same money you will spend on parts for the shell you have. There are lots of Acrolites out there!

Chris: as I suspected, the parts to refurb the Acrolite shell will cost just as much as a decent used one, like the one for sale here on VDF. While you save your pennies for a Powertone or Dyna to match the rest of your set, you could pick up something inexpensive. Just a thought.

Another possibility for consideration:

Because it is true that a decent condition complete drum generally costs far less than do the sum total of its individual parts, you may - depending on how much you have invested in the dirty Acrolite shell - opt to search for a used Acrolite in a state of very poor upkeep. These can often be found used for $50; sometimes even less. This could allow (among other possibilities) for you to learn how to assemble your drum, while obtaining all the parts to do so at an affordable price. Case in point: When searching a few months ago on the local Craigslist I purchased a 70's Ludwig Supraphonic with typically worn chrome for the sum total of $35.00! Just a thought.
