I 'm coming down with Supra 6.5 fever. I thought I was immune.

Been playing a new 6.5 x 14 Supra that belongs to the drummer in my sons band. He's been playing my 5x14 Supra.

Anyway, I am really digging the sound...a lot. So much that I want one now.

So let me pose a few questions to those of you owning vintage and new aluminum Supras.

Is there a big difference in sound or can I assume they're going to sound identical. Are they made the same way, aluminum with plated finish?

I have an opportunity to trade for one (new) but will have to fork over my B/O mid 70's Supra and $180. I'm just not finically able to afford both right now.

Is it worth the trade?

I am not a collector by any means and I'm considering doing this strictly for the sound.

Is this a bad deal for me?

In my mind I keep asking myself: (Do I really want/need a mid seventies 6.5 Supra?) The cost man the cost!

How bad do you want it? Sounds to me like you've already made up your mind. New ones go for $450 - shipped on Fleabay, so it isn't a bad trade. Given the value of the B/O supra, it's as even a swap as you can get. It's really all about how badly you want the new drum.

Your call... the swap is equitable.

Hey John thanks for chiming in

I think I have made up my mind. I do want it.

Saying its a fair deal helps me too.

My supra is one that rejected pitting somehow.

Any reports of the newer versions also being prone to pitting and flaking?

myself and Kevins did a side by side comparison of a new 402 and my 1976 402 same heads and snare wires the new one is drier sounding with less overtones. My 76 model was livelier sounding with more overtones and louder sounding than the new one. we both had a surprise in this finding. So much so kevin bought a vintage one himself.

Darn it, I was afraid of this. It doesn't take much to sway my thoughts.

Ahem... I 'thought' that it was the sound of the new ones that got your attention to begin with! Why would you change your mind now? If that's the sound you want, then go for it. Because older Supra's may have different sound qualities, shouldn't negate the fact that you dig the sound of the new ones.

Apples and oranges...

Save up some more do-re-mi for a little while and keep your B/O Supra. Soon as you hit your savings target, buy the new 6.5.

Exactly, they are different. about five years ago I bought a new 6.5 Black Beauty. Call me crazy, but I had a '78 model to compare with and went for the newer one. It's all in your head. What makes it sound good to you is what you should go with... and, with world class drums like the Supraphonic. the decision really turns into a mind tussle. I'd have both.
