Hello to this vintage drum forum !

i`m new to this forum. After passing through several music decades, i went back into time and stopped in the beginning of the last century. Because i started playing brushes again and wanted to get into vintage sounds since a half year, i`m playing a ludwig & ludwig chicago snare drum now. After a while, i`m asking me, if the greengold sparklefinish is original ? The facts, which i found in the vintage drum identification, are:

14" X 4"

"the dance model"

Ludwig & Ludwig Chicago stamp on the hoop (batter-side)

folded over/ soldered bearing edge

build in 1918 or 1919

original steel single flanged hoops

original brass shell

original brass tube lugs

original snarestrainer/ buttend

original clip-over-rim

original tension rods (on the resonant head side)

tha air vent is on the left side of the buttend

Would be nice, if someone can give me an advice.

Thank`s a lot.

I've got a set of those brushes. Very nice. I love the 'whip' action they give out. Have you tried those new/old reissue brushes based off Slingerland's specs? They are amazing.

Is that a stiplegold finish?

Stipelgold wasn't around in the 6-lug era...The L&L 1926-27 catalog was the first showing of the Stipelgold finish, this was the 10-lug era.

Too me also that drum looks to good on the gold finish iam thinking its been repainted at one time...A few things also are not right on the drum the black lugs and rims, the rims and lugs would have been one of these chrome, nickel,or the stiplegold finish like your strainer shows.. Alos the stiplegold finish shows up in about 1923 or so...But you still have a nice drum and a nice sounding drum..Mikey

Thank`s a lot for help !

@mcjnic: no i didn`t cause this pair of brushes fits to me very good. maybe ten years ago i tried some plastic..

After some opinions of experts i took the non-original black enamel away and some ludwigold finish over nob-finish can be seen on the tube lugs. The hoops are raw steel now. The brass shell is cleaned by an electroplating company but there are still some very little flakes or sparkles. The Surface is not rough like sandblasted but like sandpaper with 800 up to over 1000k.

My opinion is now to polish the parts with polishing compound.

Could it be that this is the original finish of the drum ?

I would clear lacquer the top and bottom rims...remember...rust never sleeps...
