Need your help! Ludwig Drum Identification Last viewed: 11 hours ago

Hi from Münster, Germany. This is my first post here concerning an old Ludwig set I bought a few weeks back and I just can't identify the exact model. Thanks for helping out! :)

The bassdrum has a keystone badge, serial number 460853 (1967), no date stamps inside, white interior. BD had a Tama mount with extra holes on it and has gull wing spurs with second generation script brackets. The bassdrum has been painted white, but if you look closely you can see Champagner sparkle finish. Especially where the badge and tom mount is. The hoops don't seem to be original, right?

The floortom is painted white as well (outside and inside). Don't know if it's the original finish, but it looks really bad. Again no date stamps. No badges. No drum mufflers. Still there's the original holes (one small, one bigger). Second generation script brackets. One of the hoops isn't original (it says TAIWAN on it).

The other toms (12" & 13") doesn't have white interior and again, no date stamps or badges. Round muffler pads. Script bracket on the 13" and TAMA (?) bracket on the 12" tom.

Well, that's my "new" project. I'd be more than happy if anyone could tell me anything about the model, especially for the toms. At least for the bassdrum I'd say it's a 1967 Hollywood. I'd love to see how the bassdrum will look with its original champagne finish. Any ideas how to get rid of the white paint without damaging the finish?

Thanks a million!

I'm no expert here, but a few things leap out.

Wrong t-rods and claws on the BD batter side.

Rack tom looks like a later era, possibly Rocker or SL.

I've not seen wing screws like that on a Ludwig classic style tom mount before, but as I say, I'm not an expert.

I would say, but don't quote me as there are more expert eyes here, the BD and FT seem to be legit - vandalised, but legit - the rack, however, I would say is a ring-in. That is, from a different era kit.

The white interior of the BD seems untouched - the lug bolts are not painted over, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Ludwig was known for knocking drums out quickly in the 60s and not always neatly, so maybe I'm wrong there.

Are the toms showing any similar champagne sparkle under the (rubbish) paint job? Great colour and much sought after. I suggest get rid of the white paint on everything and see what it is you have exactly. Goof Off is a great product for doing that. There must be a German equivalent.

Okay, that's my go, who's next? :)

You've already been given good advice from above post. The tom looks to be a Monroe era tom. Not a chicago keystone era tom, still great sounding and very well made. you've got a great kit from which to build from.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

I have seen and owned a few original drums from that era that had taiwan stamped on one of the hoops. Never both hoops. Just one.

Thanks for your answers!

Now I see the wrong t-rods and claws.

There's no signs of champagne sparkle on the toms. Goof Off or something equal is what I will get tomorrow. Thanks for the advice!

Yes, it's always just one "taiwan" hoop. Hmmm…

Would there be any other details that could tell me anything about the toms?

… maybe the plies of wood used for the tom?

I decided to buy a fitting 13" tom for that set. Now I was wondering if there's more champagne sparkle finishes than I thought? Bass drum was painted white and is now clean again but the finish looks faded. Especially in contrast to the tom. Looks like it's two complete different finishes. What do you think?

Thanks for your help!
