Somehow within the last couple of years I have gone from owning a vintage kit and being enthusiastic about vintage American drums to having to concede that I may be becoming a collector, trouble is I am not sure where the boundry lies.

So I have included a photo of my current snare drum stash and perhaps somebody could tell me am I an enthusiast or am I a collector?

from left to right we have

1954 5 1/2 x 14 solid maple Radio King

1940 7 x 14 solid maple radio king

1964 5 x 14 Leedy Shelly Manne

1951 5 x14 L&L solid maple

1954 6 1/2 x 14 L&L 3 ply Broadway

1937 6 1/2 x 14 Leedy solid ply Broadway

1947 8 x 14 Leedy 3 ply Broadway

1920s 4 x14 Ludwig all gold

They all get played and apart from the Shelly Manne which is part of my Leedy bop kit they are all pre 60s as I prefer earlier drums for no logical reason other than quirkiness

You've unlocked this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension: a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You've moved into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into......The Vintage Drum Collecting Twilight Zone.....and you can never go back. Nice collection.

I was afraid that would be the answer, what made me feel I was moving in that direction was trading two kits with slight problems for one that was catalogue correct and in brilliant condition, that kind of started geek warnings in my head.

Oh well may as well give in

I've got the same issue. From 1992 to 2008 I had just one kit that went everywhere with me. I now have about 10 kits and 15 snares and more cymbals than i really need. I still have the original kit, which i never really looked after, and despite not using it now I gave it a complete strip down and refurb - I wonder if I'm actually addicted to the polish fumesJump For Joy

I also find myself getting the kits as close to original as possible which can be expensive from this side of the world.

i'm not bothered by this though. You just have to go with it.
