New Forum Member Greetings and Metal Snare Drum Question Last viewed: 52 minutes ago

Loading...

Hello to all my fellow drum enthusiasts! Im very excited to be a new member of this forum and look forward to all the fellowship that is to be!

Here's something i've been wondering:

Is there any clear way to identify the difference between steel, brass, chrome over steel, or chrome over brass? I have a really hard time telling them apart and was wondering if anybody had any tips for me. Aluminum, copper, and even bell brass is easy to spot but i've always had problems with these other metals...

Thanks guys!

Hi Nate, and Welcome to the forum!

The single best tool you can have for this is a simple magnet. If it sticks, it's steel, if not, then it's something else. If the magnet does not stick, then the next test is the weight - light is aluminum, and heavy is brass. You can make other small deductions from there, but those are the raw basics to get you started. I hope that helps.

Bowing your the man thanks alot! So that clears up everything except for telling whether something is chrome over steel or just stainless steel... does anyone have any suggestions?

A magnet won't stick to good quality stainless steel. Welcome to the VDF
