New guy, Kent question Last viewed: 39 minutes ago

Hello!

I found this forum today looking for info about Kent drums. I was looking on ebay for a drum or two to make up a small kit. Then I happen to see a listing for a pair of Kent Drums, 12X14. They have snares on the bottom, and appear to have long tension rods that go through a loop mid shell. The strainer is a simple threaded tensioner, no throw off. The rims are a light colored wood, the shell has a mahogany look to it.

They appear to have calfskin/fiberskin type heads, top and bottom. Everything looks to be in good shape. They look like small marching snare drums to me.

Currently, I only own a cheap non vintage snare drum. I love snare drumming, and love vintage stuff. I work on vintage rifles and shotguns almost everyday.

Just to tell you a bit about my drumming background, I started in 6th grade, and have been at it off and on ever since. I did the High school band thing, tried out but never did the DCI thing, and eventually taught drummers in a few different hs bands over the years. Once, two former students and I bought some old marching snares, stripped the shells, refinished them, and turned them into psuedo old time marching snare drums. We formed a fife and drum corps, and did a parade. I played Side drum in a pipe band for a few years, and don't do anything with drums at present.

These things are tempting me, and I feel like I am at a dangerous place, even joining this forum!

No one has bid yet, but maybe folks are lurking? As they stand right now, with shipping both could be had for around $100.

I would probably use one of them to accompany my kids with our little band we are forming. The drums would fit i with the look of my little ukulele almost perfectly.

Any thoughts, warnings, or advice about future therapy/intervention options would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Tom

I think that $59 plus shipping would be about the market rate for them, if even that. $50 for the pair might actually be more like it. I tend doubt that anyone on this forum would pay much more than that.

1) Generally, marching drums can be had for less than other drums-- especially these ones because they just aren't that desirable or popular for a kit application.

2) Kent drums are usually less sought-after than the "Big Four" (Rogers, Slingerland, Gretsch, Ludwig.

3) These old marchers are being sold as a pair, which believe it or not I actually think makes this auction even less desirable for the general drum-buying public. I think that the circumstances are rather limited where you would actually sacrifice precious storage space for a pair of Kent marching snares. You would have to have some sort of hoarding fetish for Kent drums or you would have something in mind like you described above-- using them for a family band or forming a cool "old school" fife and drum corps.

Welcome to the forum! Have fun and give us your :2Cents: or ask us for ours from time to time!

Thanks for the welcome, and the input.

I tend to like odd or less desirable stuff anyway. Marching snare drums would be my thing, if I ever got into this kind of thing.

I'll cogitate on it.

Take care,

Tom
