New guy with REMO Acousticon question. Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hey Everybody:

Been thrashing away since I was eight and I'm 53 now. Went through grade school training, high school and a little college jazz band. Drum corp was some of the best training I ever had and played in neighborhood bands since I was a kid up to bus tours out of Nastyville. Spent most my life on the road and also play guitar and sing as well as keys.

Started restoring kits with new wrap and on my third project. My current kit is a 76 Ludwig Maple kit with deep Supraphonic snare and Zildjians. Love this kit, but the 24" kick is a bit cumbersome.

I picked up a REMO 516 Acousticon kit a few years ago and stored it in the garage for a rainy day project. I've ordered an orange sparkle finish and have already stripped the drums down to their shells. Somebody had already done a horrid job of re-wrapping them and I'm hoping to bring them back to a better life as a downsized jazz kit for fast load ins. Does anybody have some background

on these drums that might be useful?

Cheers,

Charlie

My only experience with the Remo Acousticon is this.....

An extremely nice, quality built, snare drum. Really dry, warm tone.

How cool is that??? Both 53 and recovering the Acousticon kits? I'm taking photos on my iphone during the progress and it was pretty bad to start with, but I'm hopeful for a sweet looking orange glitter that I ordered from Ebay last week. I've already stripped off the heads, rims, lugs and old covering. I cleaned and polished the chrome with Turtle wax chrome cleaner and wiped the inside of the shells off with a damp cloth. The rims are looking great now and I think I can reuse the original REMO front head that has the big logo. The drums were purchased a few years back and came with a 22" kick, 16" floor, 12" mounted tom and an 8" inch that I'm not bothering with at the moment. The tom hardware has stripped out and I'll be covering the kick mount over and keep it and the 12" tom virgin. I'm using a snare stand on the tom and I already do the same thing on my Ludwig kit. I'll post photos soon!
