New here, questions on valuing my drums Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hello, new member here. I have some questions that you guys might be able to help me with. I am looking to sell my vintage Ludwig kit (images below) that I bought a couple years ago, however, seem to have some obstacles to overcome as far as what they are really worth. I know that what they are worth to me, visually & sonically, may not be what a collector thinks they are worth.

Here are the main questions I have:

1.) I don't think that any of the drums are factory matched. They are all white marine pearl wrap so they all look great together as a set and they sound great together as well but it seems that the dates range from late 60's to late 70's for the bass, floor, tom, and the snare is 80's I believe (black/silver badge). How does this effect the overall value of the set even when pieced out separately each drum has some decent value?

2.) The bass drum is 24" x 14", white inside, most likely re-wrapped. A blue/olive badge with no serial was put on so I don't think it's original but I feel like the drum is at least 70's range. I realize there are a lot of negatives with this one but the drum sounds great! Huge boom! To me that is worth a lot. To someone else, given the above, I don't know where it stands. How does this effect the value of the bass drum and the kit as a whole?

FYI: The floor and small toms seems to be all original and are in good condition. Floor is 18" x 16", it's a beast, and has a Blue/Olive badge with serial that points to 1978 or 1979. The small tom is 14" x 10" with Blue/Olive badge with serial pointing to 1969. It has a single mount. It has a natural finish inside.

The snare I think is from the 80's with a black/silver badge. But it does match the kit and sounds good. Needs a few lugs replaced at least.

3.) So, with all of that taken into consideration, do you think I am better off selling as a kit or should I piece all of the drums out? That would be a shame since the kit as a whole goes really well together.

Thank you to anyone who takes the time to read and respond with some insight. I realize it's a lot to read and I really appreciate it. If any other specific info or images would help please let em know. Thanks!!!

It's a players kit. Collecters will not bite. Player kits demand lower prices than pristine born together kits. Keep it together or sell them individually. Your call. Most people are money driven so the assumption is you want the most money you can get. Selling them apart will net the most.

Ryan. could you post some pics of the grommet holes and some closeups of the wrap etc! with the added on bass drum spurs, it is like mcjnic stated it's a players kit not a true collectible, but still a great kit! why are you selling it?

So what does a players kit go for compared to a collectors kit?

Just like a true collectors kit it depends on condition, originality, what Issues are involved etc re wrap, re finished, bearing edges re cut,non original parts! a whole slew of things

Thanks guys, what you say makes a lot of sense. I'm starting to get the picture now. I'm not looking to make a killing, just want what it's really worth. Not so desperate to sell, could use the money, but mostly selling because I have no time to play unfortunately and I feel someone else could get better use out of it.

@vintagemore2000 - I'll take some extra pics tonight, thanks!
