Hey everybody, I'm new right now. Not much experience with this sort of thing;

couldn't even find the introduction forum to say hello. But I digress. I just picked up an Acrolite, want to say late 70s early 80s - serial number 3125036 B/O with rounded tips. Here's where I'm getting stumped: it has a rather pale gray shell that's wrinkle finish inside and out. It appears to be fully original factory spec right down to the skins, there's the number 790 stamped on the inside of the shell. Also it has the black face P-85 strainer with two holes threaded and the newer strap holder attachment on it like the silver face p-85s. Not sure if this is a type of powder coat or a wrinkle finish painting process but it's very well applied and consistent inside and out - even the bearing edge has "bumps" on it that can be seen through the snare side skin at the bearing edge. I've looked all over the web, only found one on ebay with little to no description at all - seller knows virtually nothing about it (seemed like a non drummer). I've looked everywhere in the old Ludwig catalogs on-line... and nothing... This drum seems to have a little bit of everything on it: late 70s badge, early 80s serial number, mid-late 80s P-85 with 90s strap attachment? Any ideas? Thanks, Eric

I've got one just like this....the finish is a grey powder-coat, and the throw off would be correct. The last of the black-face throw-offs were threaded and used the strap just like the current silver face ones do. Your drum was made sometime in the mid-1980's and is one of the last of the drums made in Chicago before the move to Monroe, NC. Sounds all original to me.....

With a 790 stamp and 7 digit serial number starting with 3, I'd think July 1990 might be a good guess?

Thank you guys for the replies - first forum I've ever joined of any kind, wondering why I didn't start sooner, this is great. So... this Acrolite is powder coated but is this totally bumpy finish standard? I mean it's a fantastic "wrinkle" finish-very consistent inside and out. I guess I always assumed from all the powder coated surfaces I've seen on numerous items that it was typically a smooth finish process. In any event I've never seen one before, then again I haven't seen a 90s catalog either. Maybe this textured surface gave the drum a drier tone similar to a hammered supra as they state in their literature? The drum sounds great as all Acrolites do in my humble opinion. So I take it they don't use this finish anymore, but when do think they stopped? I'm glad to know it's one of the last Chicago drums made - sad to see the black face P-85 go away, it's much more elegant than the silver me thinks. I cant imagine that this was a defect in the finishing process, i.e. lack of catalyst or bonding agents, etc., that caused the wrinkle and I can't imagine they'd let them slip out the door either. I think I've seen powder coated Acros before - totally smooth and consistent.

Anyway... thanks for the help and insight. I will get some photos up as soon as I learn how (not kidding) - not too tech savvy but moving forward.

Cheers, Eric

If it's grey powder-coat it would be earlier than 1990, since late 1989 was the year they started with the black galaxy powder-coating, unless of course it was a leftover shell.......Hmmmm
