New "60s" Black Oyster Pearl Comparison Last viewed: 3 hours ago

I recently posted a pic (in the Restoring Vintage Drums section) of some Ludwigs I rewrapped in Jammin Sam's "New 60's Black Oyster Pearl". I received a few questions inquiring about the similarity between this new repro wrap and the original. I don't own any original OBP, so I can't confirm first hand how close a match the new wrap is to the original, but below is a close-up shot of the new wrap and a shot of my rewrapped kit compared to some shots of Ringo's original kits.

Regarding a question as to how close this new wrap is to Rogers' Black Strata, I do own a Rogers Black Strata tom, so I was able to put the two together for a comparison shot. I think the original Rogers wrap is slightly more warm and brownish compared to the new, cooler-toned repro OBP. Of course, some fading could have occurred on the Rogers wrap, but I don't think they're close enough a match to mix the wraps on the same kit.

Hope this helps a little with any decision making. Thoughts? Other pics?

Here's an original (bottom) and a repro side by side. The new stuff looks good and a whole set done in it looks like Ringo's set but when you try to mix and match old and new the difference is pretty obvious.
