New remo powerstroke black dot ? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hey guys,

Was wondering if anyone has tried the new Remo Powerstroke CS Black Dot bass drum head ? One of the bands that i play in is a classic rock cover band, and i figured it would be cool to have that thumpy but also boomy 60's -70's bass drum sound to suit the band's music..

I just have one concern that it may be too "dead" of a sound, or have that cardboard sound..

The downside is that i can't try out the head at the music shop because they don't have it set up on any kit, also the fact that i'm putting on my vintage Ludwig kit will definitely differ in sound to any modern bass drum, let alone a modern Ludwig.. I don't use any muffling in my bass drum and don't use a porthole cut into the resonant head, to still maintain that "boom" resonant sound.. I figured that this head would have the best of both worlds, but i can't tell until i put on my bass drum..

Any thoughts, suggestions, would be appreciated..

Makes a lot of sense for a bass drum head; pretty much a Powerstroke with a built in patch (and 70s vibes).

I inherited a 24" black dot head on a drum purchase and needed one for my Rogers bass drum I recently acquired. It is ok From my perspective behind the kit, It has a lot of attack and punch, but not the ummph I am used to. Not bad. It must sound decent out in front of the drum. I used it on a couple of rock gigs and it seemed to perform well. I had a kick mic on it. I have a smooth white reso with felt strip, and actually put a felt strip on the batter and cut some one inch weather stripping pieces and placed them at each lug at the edge of the head. I like the Super Kick 1 heads and thought I would try that to help it some. I heard these heads were basically Ambassadors with a black dot on them. I think it might sound better if I rip that plastic dot off. I removed them before. I swear I can hear that plastic when the beater strikes the head.

I would assume you're talking about a regular CS black dot head ?

I was referring to the new POWERSTROKE CS BLACK DOT, which has thin underlay like in a regular powerstroke 3, but with the CS black dot added.. The regular black dot bass drum heads sound exactly as you explained.. I never liked them on bass drums , although on toms they're phenomenal..This is why i was asking if anyone tried out this new head because i wasn't crazy about the original and was afraid it would sound pretty much the same.. But thanks for the reply, as well as to everyone else who gave their opinions.,I think i'll end up getting it anyway..;))

Ohh ok, I didn't realize there was that much difference. I am not crazy about that one on my bass drum really. I was just trying everything I could think of before I had to spring for a new head. I feel bad for my Rogers bass drum having to wear that. I am sure it is embarrassed and not happy about it.
