There are some things I play that I already play heel-up (tapping the pedal with my toe) but I only use the technique when I'm playing second line grooves that call for a more splashy sound from the hats. Now, with the unit, steady 8th notes on the hats: chick, chick, chick, chick goes: chicka-chicka, chicka-chicka, chicka-chicka, chicka-chicka. Changes the whole thing. There are 'some' grooves that are improved by the doubling of the hats, but I'm starting to see that it doesn't work in all situations. There are some grooves that the doubling disrupts. Aside from brushing up on my foot technique, I will have to experiment for awhile to find out where it works, helps the groove, and where it hurts the groove. Trial and error. But it's a fun thing to mess around with and I'm sure after a short while I'll start to master it and know when to use it to best effect. Bottom line is, like a cowbell, it's a choice as to when it is appropriate to use it. It's another 'voice' to add to your kit. Another club in the bag.
