Hi everyone! I've been browsing your forum for the last several days and thought I would register so I can post. I have a couple restoration projects I have started working on, and although I have done a fair share of drum and percussion repair, I haven't done much of the in-depth "heavy lifting" a lot of you have done. I will probably start a new thread in the appropriate forum in hopes of getting some help, but just wanted to say hello. I do not own a lot of vintage gear, as most of it is modern stuff. If it is of any interest, here is what I have:
70's - 80's Ludwig marching BD - this is my current project, hoping to refinish the shell, and use it as a small concert/pit BD.
70's Ludwig Vistalite kit - trying to clean this up and make it usable. Unfortunately the seam on the bass drum has let go, and have to get that fixed. Just cleaned up the floor tom, and need to get legs and heads.
50's Leedy & Ludwig snare - my uncle gave this to me with his old Del Rey drum set (now long gone). It's a great little drum, although I'm looking for original tension rods and an original batter hoop. Otherwise, it's in great shape and playable.
60's (?) Ludwig marching drum - one of the inexpensive ones you see on Ebay all the time. Makes a decent field drum/tenor drum for orchestra gigs when needed.
1908 Deagan Round Top bells - had these restored by Gilberto at Century Mallet. 1" bars, not the wide bar version, but they sound great, and I have gotten a lot of use out of them.
The first two items listed are why I'm here. Looking for help mainly on refinishing the marching bass drum, as I have never done it before. Is there a good resource for refinishing drum shells? I've read a few tutorials, but still have questions. Did some searching here, but will be looking for more tips soon!
