Ok just put a new Coated Amby Batter on in medium tuning. Tried a few rolls etc. The centre is responsive as always and not boxy, and the rim shot ring is a clear bell sound with an approx 2 second sustain. I think I'm ok.

From rculberson

A 5X14 Supra is model # LM400 in the Ludwig catalogs6.5X14 Supra is model # LM402. Calling a 5X14 Supra a "400" is relatively common. For example, a drummer buddy of mine texted me just last night saying he was taking "the 400" for a couple of out-of-town gigs.

Guess I could have looked that up myself, but thanks. Now I know I have a 400!

You mentioned that you do a lot of recording.

Here's a detail I always do when I am rebuilding a drum for whatever reason: I always install felt around the lug springs. It is cheap insurance against 'weird' sounds appearing during close miking...

When I did this to my old Yamaha kit, it improved the tone of the drums because those springs were resonating, but you didn't notice it until they weren't doing it any more!

I'm glad your old snare is ready for duty!Walking

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I feel your pain! About 9 years ago, I carried my 400 - not in a bag or case - up a flight of concrete/metal stairs at the apartment I was living at. I had laid a spare head inverted over the batter head of the drum. I carried it with both hands up the stairs no problem. Then, so I could get my keys out of my pocket, I grabbed it with my thumb under the hoop and the rest of my fingers over the top - with the spare head still on top. The spare head just flipped right off the top of the drum and I dropped it on the concrete balcony. I didn't hear a "pung." I heard "dunk." That was the sound of the baseball bat muffler arm landing on the concrete. It pushed the shell in a little bit. Fortunately, it didn't leave a mark on the baseball bat. I took the head and muffler off and placed a rag against the inside of the shell and lightly pushed it back out with light hammer strikes.

I'm glad yours survived undamaged!

Yay! It's still working!

Listen man, you don't have to take your drums out of the house to do some serious damage to them. I ruined the wrap on a floor tom by dropping a claw hammer! I was working on something near the drums, the hammer slipped out of my hand, and on the way down it left a 6" long scrape on my red glass glitter floor tom. Home, safest place in the world for my drums, right?

Wrong!

$hit happens. As long as it all comes out ok in the end, it's just considered 'road-wear'.

Glad your drum survived.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

From geckobeats

Ok so I did a gig last night in a local bar. I took out my Gretsch RB with matching snare and took my 60's 400 as a back-up. All cased in Pro Racket bags. I use bags when I'm handling my Drums myself otherwise its flight cases.Anyway my Wife kindly offered to drive me in to town with the kit and pick me up afterwards so I could have a few beers. Great!!Ok being winter it is dark at 7pm. We park up, she goes to help me carry the gear in by opening the back of the car and reaching in to grab my gear. When ever I do this I'm mind-full of my beauties in their bags, but no the Mrs tears the first thing she sees from the Boot(Trunk) and yanking on it sends my 400 flying (from waist height I must add) out the back and hitting the Road with a kind of high pitched "PUNG" sound. AAAAGGGHHH!!! The other guy's from the band were there too, I tried to hold it in, but my panick and anguish was clear for all to see!! On inspection it seems ok. Do you guys reckon she got away with it? Being alloy I don't suppose it would be bent or warped so as to not effect the tone. What do you reckon?

Did you at least let the drum roll ?

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!
