Hello everyone! I am new to the forum and just startied collecting vintage drums. I recently purchased a supposedly NOS Ludwig 402 from the 90's. Would someone please tell me if in fact I did get an authentic drum from this era? This snare has the bowtie lugs, an internal muffler, Monroe badge with no serial number...under Ludwig Drum Co., it says Chicago USA. It also has blue Ludalloy sticker inside and Rocker top and bottom heads, and black inscripted throw off. The seller said his father used to own a drum shop and he found two of these in storage. I am aware that an older 402 would most likely be more collectable, but winning bid was much lower than buying a new one and I liked the fact that it was NOS. Any help would greatly be appreciated!

Welcome! Please post a pic. The 402 should have Imperial lugs as that would be standard for Supraphonics. An Acrolite would be standard with bowties, but we see them all the time with bowties, so if there are 10 lugs and it is chrome over aluminum, then it is a supra.

....unless it is one of those Rockers snares that LOOKS like a Supra. If it has the blue sticker inside, it should say ludalloy shell, or anti-galvanic, or maybe both. In the latter days of Chicago, there were all sorts of strange things coming out as they were trying to use up stock so they didn't have top move it. A 402 would be a 6 1/2, correct?

What you have is a Ludwig 402 that is as good as any with the blue and olive badge i also own one, they slip under the radar because people think they are a budget drum because of the lugs, in fact as good as the drum Bonham played. If he were still around he would probably have one in his collection good luck and well done, enjoy!
drumology: I have a 1984 Supra?/Rocker?/Acrolite? that I,ve been trying to ID for a very long time.
Read my previous post dated, 04/17/2010- Help ID a snare drum
04/09/2008- Mystery snare
If your snare looks like the one I have you will drive yourself crazy trying to ID it so save your efforts as I have come to the conclusion that Ludwig Co. itself doesn,t know the ID of the snare.
My drum is a 1984 and has 10 Bowtie lugs and a large Chicago USA keystone badge with no serial#s that I assume was some type of transition badge to the Monroe location. I will try to send pictures.

You have a Supra with bowtie lugs. This was typical in the final transitional days from Chicago to Monroe. The used up whatever they had at that time to get rid of as much stock as possible so it would not have to be re-located. Some thing could be possible on this drum, but he has not provided pix, so it is still up in the air.
