Not a Black Panther snare but close enough.. Last viewed: 1 hour ago

The odds of finding a 60's Black Panther Keystone snare?

Pretty slim. So my search for the next best thing for a matching snare was off. I needed a 60's Black keystone badge snare in really good shape. Didn't care what model. Pioneer, Jazzfest, Auditorium. They are all good. But even those were few & far between due to the paint always spidering, cracking & peeling. Well this just goes to show if you should never give up. This amazing No. 491 Pioneer Lacquer model arrived today & I have not touched it. And I did not break the bank. It's all original still. I'm amazed by how good of shape it's still in. Low SN puts at Nov 63-mid 64. I'll keep looking for that Panther snare, but in the meantime, this nice piece of history will suffice.

Nice looking snare. What is the black panther finish and when did it first become available?

The Black Panther finish wrap was Ludwig's attempt at making a leather type of wrap, sort of a naugahyde type wrap, but softer. It was released on the market from 1968 until 1983, as Jimi Hendrix drummer, Mitch Mitchell had one. Click on the link, scroll down the page and click on the "black panther" pic and you'll see a close up and a description of the finish..

It would not seem that difficult to get some black tolex and make yourself a matching snare. Maybe not using a vintage Jazz fest but an early Rocker snare with bowtie lugs rewrapped in black could do the trick and not cost too much.
