I think it's the glue stained maple peeking through. Mod wraps do appear occasionally under black Panther but 'occasionally' is the operative word here. Nice kit as is.

I don't believe anyone has found any Mod Orange shells under Black Panther (which is Tolex style covering like used on guitar amps). There have been cases of finding Citrus Mod under BP though. Mod orange seems to have sold well enough that they didn't need to dispose of it while apparently at least a few Citrus Mod shells sat around the factory long enough that they over-wrapped them in the thin black covering to move them out.

I also think that Ludwig started doing this as they probably had shells made up in citrus mod in 1970 and when Ludwig realized the color wasn't selling they pulled them from the shelves and put the BP on instead as BP is a thin wrap.

I would highly doubt you will ever see a citrus mod keystone set covered in BP as Ludwig was still giving the color a chance to sell during the keystone era. Maybe it would be possible if shells made up in 1969 got shelved and sat around too long. It's hard to know.

I have a 1971 mod orange club date and I suspect that mod orange was also starting to fall out of favor and using that color on a student model set would make sense. I mean what student would complain about getting any Ludwig set? I'm sure a student would have been happy with just about any color. I know I would have....

Judging by the photos, there is no wrap under the black panther tolex. If I had to wager a guess, that orangey-red color in the scratched areas is just the aged maple and whatever glue they used to stick the tolex down, or possible but less likely, those shells have a mahogany outer ply.

Is the dime included in the purchase?

I think that's just wood underneath and it looks to me like the color balance for many of the images has too much orange in it. That could just be the lighting temperature. No need to invoke glue or mahogany or anything else in that case. Just an artifact of the lighting for the photos and/or the post processing of the images.
