Oaklawn Camco in need... Last viewed: 2 hours ago

From Sanityclause

I scrambled to throw some parts on this shell so I could get it up on a stand to hear it. Wow, it has every frequency I like to hear in a snare and more importantly, every frequency that I think a mic will smile upon. Body, crack, mids, this thing sounds really beautiful. I will continue to search for Camco parts, but for now its playable which was my aim. Oh course its a personal taste , but I don't know why other companies didn't follow suit in using undersized shells and similar bearing edge profiles. This drum is impressive. The ranting of the newly converted... SC.

You know that's a really good question..

Why didn't other companies follow suit by using slightly undersized shells and similar bearing edge profiles ?

dw did adopt or follow suit when it comes to the thin, highly resonant shells. I believe it was the exact thickness of the Camco shells that George Way researched and discovered back in the 1950s that would have maximum resonance and tone, without over resonating. That combined with the shells being undersized and the custom bearing edges is what makes Camcos so spectacular.

Just 3 basic things, and each one wouldn't set the drums apart on their own, but put all 3 together...that made all the difference...

SC - I've been asking that question for years! Why doesn't any modern drum company simply follow the footsteps in the snow that George Way left behind? Geo. Way/Camco drums are some of the very best sounding drums ever made anywhere. Everybody who gets to play them finds that out after the first hit. Yet nobody, not even DW who is supposed to be the heir apparent for anything Camco, is off doing 'something else'!

Boggles the mind. One of the projects I've been considering is putting a kit together using modern shells and putting Geo. Way/Camco edges on them. I bet they'd sound ten times better than any modern counterpart. Still waiting for somebody to do it in the commercial market place. Such a simple thing... bearing edge profile and shell construction. Basic stuff. Geo. Way/Camco perfected it.

Too many great drums to list here!
